VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLY STORE  - Diane Miller/Laura Margolies

During schedule pick-up in late August, school supplies are available for purchase as a convenience to parents.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators select and purchase school supply items requested by the teachers, recruit volunteers to help during the sale, set up, take down, return excess supplies.

 

BOOK FAIR (S) – Laura Margolies/Cindy Mowery

A weeklong event for students and staff to preview and purchase books. One or two book fairs are held during the school year – fall and/or spring.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators to set up and take down books displays, recruit and schedule volunteers as cashiers.

 

DIRECTORY – Susan Musgrave

Sometime in the fall, a book with names, addresses, phone numbers and school information of families choosing to be listed is published and distributed to students/families.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators compile information from office and updates from parents, enter into computer, coordinate with printing company and distribute books.

 

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK SALE – Heather Brehm/Kim Betz

As OSMS PTO’s most profitable fundraiser, students sell coupon books to family and friends, with a percentage of the profit deposited in the students’ Washington, D.C. account.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators to organize sale, meet with coupon book representative, recruit volunteers to collect & sort orders, distribute coupon books.

 

FALL & SPRING CONFERENCE DINNERS – Kristen Harden/Michelle Monastra

A potluck dinner is provided to the teachers on one of the evenings Parent/Teachers conferences are held.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators to solicit food items from parents, set up tables and buffet, take down, recruit any necessary volunteers.

 

LOGO – Chris Rittenhouse/Jennifer Kuhlwein

The sale of various items with to promote Olentangy spirit

Responsibilities: one coordinator to order various shirts, hats, etc., recruit volunteers so that items can to be sold during events where parents, staff and students gather (back to school store, parent/teachers conferences, holly days bazaar, sporting events, etc.).

 

MAGAZINE SALE – Donna Steele

This is a school fundraiser in which the PTO assists with volunteers. Students sell magazine subscriptions to family and friends with a percentage of the profit deposited in the students’ Washington D.C. account.

Responsibilities: One coordinator to recruit volunteers for 3 days to tabulate and verify order forms, and distribute prizes to students.

 

 

 

NEWCOMERS/WELCOMING – Kathy Sieve

Olentangy has many new residents to the district throughout the school year. This is our opportunity to welcome these people to our community.

Responsibilities: one coordinator to compile welcoming packets that include helpful school and PTO information, to make a welcoming phone call to the family, to send home a welcoming packet with the new student.

 

PARENT FORUM REPRESENTATIVE – Open

District wide Parent Forums are held every school year. The goal is to offer information to parents on raising children.

Responsibilities: one coordinator will attend monthly meetings and assist in planning these events. Also acts as a liaison between the committee and the PTO to keep parents updated and informed.

 

SCHOOL STORE – Cheryl Wimer

This is a place for students to purchase school supplies during their lunchtime throughout the school year.

Responsibilities: one coordinator to order supplies and  recruit volunteers to work throughout the year.

 

STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON – Shelley Johnson

A buffet style potluck luncheon is given to the staff to show our appreciation for their hard work.

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators to solicit food items from parents, plan decorations, a small gift, recruit volunteers for set up, serving and clean up.

 

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR – Julie Young

Many volunteers are needed throughout the school year.

Responsibilities: one person to create sign-up sheets for the various events for parents to indicate their willingness to help. Once compiled, distributes lists to Chairpersons/Coordinators of each event as a tool for them to recruit and schedule their volunteers. Also provides a master copy to PTO Board.

Walk-a-Thon – Shan-ni Playko/Jaime Horvath

A new fundraiser to be held in the Spring.  This fundraiser will be used to purchase items identified by the staff and students for Shanahan Middle School.  Recent examples are portable sound system, flat screen monitors for daily announcements, Wellness Room exercise equipment. 

Responsibilities: one or two coordinators to schedule and organize Walk-a-Thon event with SMS staff and recruit and schedule volunteers to help with the walk-a-thon and collection of donations.

 

WEB PAGE – Kathleen Strawser

OSMS PTO maintains a web page linked through the school web page to help keep parents up to date about various events and important information.

Responsibilities: one person with good technology knowledge to periodically update the web page as requested by the PTO Board. Works closely with the Communications Officer.
