Volunteer Opportunities

There are loads of opportunities to get involved in OSMS PTO – from chairing/coordinating to simply being available to volunteer and help out from time-to-time. Contact the PTO President or Vice President to learn more.

Author Visit
Each year an author is scheduled to visit the school and meet with students and teachers. One coordinator is needed to assist the librarian in scheduling and to make arrangements for the author’s needs during his/her visit (arranging for lunch, assisting in the sale of their book, etc.)
Back-to-School Store
During schedule pick-up in August, school supplies are available for purchase as a convenience to parents. One or two coordinators are needed to select and purchase school supply items requested by the teachers, recruit volunteers to help during the sale, set up, take down, and return excess supplies.
Book Fair(s)
A weeklong event for students and staff to preview and purchase books. One or two book fairs are held during the school year – Fall and/or Spring. One or two coordinators are needed to set up and take down books, displays and to recruit and schedule volunteers to work as cashiers during the event.
Directory
In the Fall, a booklet with names, addresses, phone numbers and school information of families choosing to be listed is published and distributed to students/families. One or two coordinators are needed to compile information from the office and from updates from parents, to coordinate with a printing company, and to distribute the completed directories.
Eighth Grade Recognition
A program for eighth graders is held on the last day of school. One or two coordinators are needed to organize, set up, and assist with any activities and to recruit volunteers as needed. This position works with the principal and the 8th grade teachers.
Entertainment Book Sale
This is OSMS PTO’s most profitable fundraiser. Students sell coupon books to family and friends. A percentage of the profit is deposited in the students’ Washington D.C. trip accounts. One or two coordinators are needed to organize the sale, meet with the coupon book representative, distribute coupon books, recruit volunteers to collect & sort orders.
Fall & Spring Parent/Teacher Conference Dinners
A potluck dinner is provided to the teachers on one of the evenings that parent/teacher conferences are held. One or two coordinators are needed to solicit food items from parents, set up tables and buffet, take down, and to recruit volunteers as necessary.

Logo

The sale of hats, shirts, etc. with Olentangy and OSMS themes to promote Olentangy spirit. One coordinator is needed to order the logo items, to recruit volunteers to help sell logo items during various events (back-to-school store, parent/teacher conferences, Holly Days Bazaar, etc.)
Magazine Sale
This is a school fundraiser in which the PTO assists with volunteers. Students sell magazine subscriptions to family and friends and a percentage of their profit is deposited into their Washington D.C. trip account. One coordinator is needed to recruit volunteers for 3 days to tabulate and verify order forms and to distribute prizes to students.
Newcomers/Welcoming
Olentangy has many new residents move into the district throughout the school year. This is our opportunity to welcome these people to our community. One coordinator is needed to compile welcome packets that include helpful school and PTO information, to make a welcome phone call to the family, to send home a welcome packet with the new student.
Parent Forum Representative
District-wide Parent Forums are held every school year. The goal is to offer information to parents on raising children. One coordinator is needed to attend monthly meetings and to assist in planning these events. This person also acts as a liaison between the committee and the PTO to keep parents updated and informed.
Schedule Pick-up Volunteers
In late August, the school opens for students to pick up their schedules, get school pictures taken, pay fees, and purchase supplies. One coordinator is needed to recruit volunteers to assist office staff in a variety of tasks during those few days in August.
School Store
This is a place for students to purchase school supplies during their lunch time throughout the school year. One coordinator is needed to order supplies and to recruit volunteers to man the store throughout the year.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
A buffet-style potluck luncheon is given to the staff of OSMS to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication. One or two coordinators are needed to solicit food donations from parents, to plan decorations and a small gift, and to recruit volunteers for set up, serving, and clean up.
Webmaster
OSMS PTO maintains a web site to help keep parents informed about various events and important PTO information. One person is needed to periodically update the web site as requested by the PTO board.
